"Pro-choicers" proudly say how they support women's right, their freedom to "choose". But is the term "pro-choice" really accurate in describing them?
I was debating abortion once with a girl, a self proclaimed "pro-choicer". She was outraged when I called her "pro-abortion". "No, I'm PRO-CHOICE!" she raged. This argument had frequently come up between us and had always ended up fruitless. Deciding this time should be different, I asked her whether or not she thought the title "pro-life" was an accurate title for me. "No, you're not pro-life, you're PRO-BIRTH!" I asked her why she thought this. "Because all you care about is fetuses. What about all the other people dying before their time? You're not pro-life for them." I then asked her if she was pro-choice for everything. After a little back and forth she finally admitted she wasn't pro-choice for everything, I asked her what choices she was against. She mentioned things like murder, stealing. "Would it be accurate, then, for me to call you anti-choice?" She said no and asked me what I was getting at. I told her that there were many choices in the world, so "pro-choice" could mean anything. If she didn't support every choice out there, she couldn't be "pro-choice".
I then preceded to say that it is important when debating to make it as clear as possible what we mean. I couldn't in good conscious
call her "anti-life" or "pro-death" since she was only "anti-life" when it came to abortion. So if I couldn't call her anti-life, pro-death, or pro-choice, the only thing left to call her is pro-abortion. This is in my opinion the most accurate term. It has the word "abortion" right in there so we know exactly what we're talking about.
Now the term "pro-life" is a little be different. You could be pro-life all around: anti-abortion, anti-death penalty, anti-war. In that case the term "pro-life" would be fairly accurate, but when you're talking about a specific life issue you want to be specific in what you call yourself. The most specific I think you can get on the abortion issue is anti-abortion.
So next time you're debating abortion, say what you mean. You're either pro-abortion or anti-abortion.
